Drones are rapidly changing the way roofing professionals work. Rather than sending operatives up ladders to carry out potentially dangerous inspections, a drone can survey an entire roof in minutes, capturing high-resolution imagery of cracked tiles, failing flashings, blocked gutters, and deteriorating pointing — all from the ground. This not only speeds up the quoting and assessment process but significantly reduces the risk of falls and injuries on site. For roofers, the ability to show clients clear evidence of issues before work begins also builds trust and justify costs.

Using a drone commercially means operating within UK law, and the rules are more detailed than many people realise. UK drone registration requires operators to obtain a Flyer ID and/or an Operator ID through the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). A Flyer ID is required even for drones under 100 grams and is obtained by passing a free online multiple-choice test. The Operator ID is a separate requirement — it is mandatory for anyone responsible for drones or model aircraft, must be renewed annually and must be physically attached to every drone you own, displayed in block capitals that are clearly visible. Failure to register could result in significant penalties.

Beyond registration, roofing contractors using drones need to be mindful of where and how they fly. Most operations fall within what’s known as the Open Category, which covers lower-risk flights but in certain situations, such as flying closer to built-up areas or over populated streets, you may move into the Specific Category, which requires formal CAA approval. Operating near residential properties, as roofing work so often involves, demands particular care around privacy, flight height, and proximity to people. Getting the registration and training right is our top priority.
